Holy Week Timeline(8 days)

Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday

  1. Sunday-Jesus’ Triumphal Entry on Palm Sunday

Matthew 21:7-9 “They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.  A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
    “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

  2. Monday-Jesus clears the Temple
When Jesus arrived at the Temple, he found the courts full of corrupt money changers . He began overturning their tables and clearing the Temple, saying, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves” (Luke 19:46).

  1. Tuesday-Jesus in the Temple teaching. Jesus with the disciples at the Mount of Olives. (Matthew 24)
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. (Matthew 23:27-28)

  1. Wednesday-Jesus rests with His disciples.
-Tenebrae Service-The latin word for darkness. In Western Christianity it is the ceremony of distinguishing of lights. It is a liturgical ceremony where the story of Jesus’ trial and death are told as candles are put out. Worshippers leave the service in darkness and silence as they contemplate the “darkness” of the days to come.

  1. Thursday-Maundy Thursday-The Passover and the Last Supped
On Thursday evening after sunset, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as they prepared to share in the Passover. By performing this humble act of service, Jesus demonstrated by example how believers should love one another.

“I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.” (Luke 22:15-16)

  1. Good Friday- Trial, Crucifixion, Death, and Burial
Jesus spoke seven final statements from the cross. His first words were, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34). His last words were, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46)

Then, about the ninth hour (3 p.m.), Jesus breathed his last breath and died .

By 6 p.m. Friday evening, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea took Jesus’ body down from the cross and lay it in a tomb.

  1. Holy Saturday-Jesus in the Tomb-Easter Vigil
Jesus’ body lay in its tomb , where it was guarded by Roman soldiers throughout the day on Saturday, which was the Sabbath . When the Sabbath ended at 6 p.m., Christ’s body was ceremonially treated for burial with spices purchased by Nicodemus:

“He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.” (John 19: 39-40)

-Easter Vigil-Services are held at sunset where the candles are lit to signify the Resurrection and the sunrise on Resurrection day morning

  1. Sunday-Resurrection Sunday
On Resurrection Sunday , or Easter, we reach the culmination of Holy Week. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important event of the Christian faith. The very foundation of all Christian doctrine hinges on the truth of this account.

“Don’t be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as He said would happen.” (Matthew 28:5-6)
