This Month we take the opportunity to highlight the history, culture and achievements of Black people in America. The national theme for Black History Month is Black Resistance. The Black church has always played a major role in civil rights, liberation and civil rights movements. The Baptist church, especially, has always been the hub for organization and meetings. The church also gave its pastors, ministers and members as leaders in the movement. Our hymns and gospel sounds provided the soundtrack for rallies, marches and mass imprisonment. Finally the church has always provided selfcare and a sanctuary for safety.
One of the greatest acts of resistance is prayer. We break the chains of evil in the spiritual and physical evils by crying out to our Heavenly Father. God hears and answers our prayers.
“Walk together children, don’t you get weary. There’s a Great Camp Meeting in the Promised Land.”

Our First Lady, Dr. Babette R. Harrell, impressed upon us that we need to preserve our Negro Spirituals. We need to sing them, learn their meanings and teach them to our children. She shared a little known fact about shoes. The enslaved were intentionally not given shoes because they had a better chance of escaping if their feet had protection. So every time you put on a pair of shoes to protect your feet from the elements, be thankful. And if you have a closet full of shoes, remember shoes equal freedom!!!
